Joint MRI for injuries that won't settle.

From a twisted knee at five-a-side to a sore shoulder at the gym, MRI shows ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bone clearly, so you know whether to rest, rehab or see a specialist.

When to get a joint scanned

  • Sports injuries where you need to know whether it's safe to train
  • Locking, giving way or swelling in a joint
  • Pain that hasn't settled after a few weeks of rest or physiotherapy
  • Planning surgery or injections with a specialist

Many joint scans take around 20 to 30 minutes, and for knee, ankle and foot scans you usually go into the scanner feet first, with your head outside.

What happens next

Your GP explains the report and agrees a plan with you. That might be physiotherapy, a sports medicine or orthopaedic opinion, or simply reassurance that you can return to activity safely. Our team includes an advanced practice physiotherapist and MSK sonographer.
